Brick Slips
Brick slips, also known as brick tiles, are thin versions of bricks. They are used in a multitude of ways to provide a real brick finish but have the advantage of being thinner, lighter and cheaper than regular facing bricks. Brick tiles can be used as part of a system such as A1 BrickBoard or ThermClad, or they can be used on their own, directly fixed to any wall with the right kind of brick slip adhesive such as our BS15F brick slip adhesive.
Types of Brick slips
There are several ways to produce brick slips and each offers a slightly different product, though with similar usage and characteristics:
- Handmade brick slips: These are formed from natural clays in traditional wooden moulds as 15mm-20mm thick “slips” (tiles). Every single handmade brick slip is unique and reflects the organic and mineral content of the seam of clay from which it has been produced. Handmade brick slips give a traditional and elegant feel and look like they have been in place for 100 years or more.
- Cut brick slips: These are slips that are cut from regular facing bricks. Typically more expensive than other types of slip because of the effort, wastage and cost involved in slicing slips from full-sized bricks.
- Machine made brick slips: In Europe these are sometimes called “Klinker” slips as they make a “clinking” sound when knocked together. Available in a wide range of different colours and formats and with different surface finishes, these are the types most commonly used on commercial projects and are always in high demand
- Manufactured brick slips: These are brick slips made from a mixture of cement, pumice, sand and silicates that are formed in moulds to give an extremely authentic surface finish that allows for homogenous colouring and tinting during production.

Building with Brick Slips
Brick slips are increasingly being used to speed up construction times and reduce the reliance on skilled labour, site space and weather conditions.
When used in conjunction with a brick slip carrier board such as our A1 BrickBoard, brick slip rainscreen facades become simple and are extremely cost-effective.
